Stickle Tarn RocksAn original plein air oil painting made after a morning's hike through the Lake District's Sickle Tarn trail, on National Trust land. I stopped at the edge of the tarn and painted the reflection of the slopes and the sky on the cool water. Unframed size 30 cm (H) x 24 cm (W) x 1 cm (D) (approx 12 x 9. 5 inches). I loved the contrast between the dark cliffs

I couldn't help but notice how elegantly large bushes of blue

over half a decade later

as I was able to use larger brushes with broader strokes to quickly capture the mood of this particular moment whilst still maintaining a certain level of detail

The deep red of the curtains and the fresh white of the tablecloth seemed to bring out the delicate beauty of the cut flowers placed in crystal vases on the table

even on a hot and humid July day

I enjoyed making studies of the animals residing on the grounds

The stunning view of the ancient structure

This painting is a fair bit larger than the size I typically work in en plein air
