Hawthorn by the RiverAn original en plein air painting of a large Hawthorn tree with its blooming white branches elegantly draping themselves upon a meadow and a river bend. While painting, I think I experienced almost every weather condition imaginable, from sun, rain, wind, and hailstones. In the end, I had to make a hasty retreat after I heard a loud clap of thunder overhead! For the most part, though, it was a beautiful spring day. I was pleased to catch the tail end

I wanted to capture the mood and movement of the goat and place him centrally in the green of the field where he stands

and I could see the gnarly branches silhouetted against the dusky sky

The yellow and red fallen apples added a wonderful touch of colour to the view of the green grass
