二○一九年，村上春樹創作邁入第四十個年頭，正如他在接受日本《共同社》的專訪中自承，「每十年都是一個轉捩點。」而出版於二○○二年的《海邊的卡夫卡》，正是他第三個十年時期的長篇代表作，當年，五十歲的村上春樹，寫出了十五歲的田村卡夫卡的成長故事，從書名和主角名字，都明顯地向村上喜歡的存在主義作家卡夫卡致敬，也帶出了這一本充滿存在主義虛無色彩的精采小說。此次時報在村上創作四十週年之際，推出《海邊的卡夫卡》首度改版，除了換上更有現代感的精緻書封，內文也經過重新審校，讓部分譯文更為精準，改頭換面的版面也更適於閱讀。
