First made in 1960 by the legendary Max Schubert, this was the wine that helped forge Penfolds reputation with red wine drinkers by combining the structure of cabernet sauvignon with the richness of shiraz. It is named after

"Lemon powder and subtle tropical notes

with richer plum compote elements from the Shiraz adding seamless flavours

Sweet fruit is evident though slightly contained by firm oak and fruit tannins

the balance is exemplary

with some sooty

It has a super pleasurable feel in the mouth

but also viticultural changes have meant the vines are in better balance and are taking up less potassium

light honeyed tones – subdued – and then

they’re not going to spend $50 on a bottle of pinot
